Grok AI’s New Image Generator Is a Willing Misinformation Superspreader

We tested X’s new AI image generator to see how easily bad actors could turn it into a misinformation superspreader. The results are alarming.

X’s new image generator (which can be accessed through its chatbot, Grok) is at least 35 percent more likely than leading image generators OpenAI’s DALL-E and Midjourney to produce misleading or false images related to major news topics when prompted by someone with malicious intent, a NewsGuard analysis found.

While X’s AI chatbot, named Grok, has been available since November 2023, the company released a new version that can generate images on Aug. 13, 2024. X’s owner Elon Musk has been transparent about Grok’s lack of guardrails, calling it the “most fun AI in the world” following the release of this latest version. X described Grok as a “rebellious” model that will “answer spicy questions that are rejected by most other AI systems” in a Nov. 4, 2023, statement.

To test Grok’s willingness to generate false or misleading images related to major news when prompted to do so, NewsGuard conducted what is called a “red team analysis.” This means that we systematically tested Grok against OpenAI’s DALL-E and Midjourney using 20 prompts derived from NewsGuard’s Misinformation Fingerprints database of provably false narratives. 

NewsGuard found that Grok produced images that could be used to advance or bolster false narratives in 80 percent of the cases tested (16 out of 20), while Midjourney generated fake images 45 percent of the time (9 out of 20), and DALL-E generated the images 10 percent of the time (2 out of 20).

Both OpenAI and Midjourney have implemented measures to curb misinformation. DALL-E 3 rejects requests that name public figures, according to an OpenAI report, and Midjourney announced in March 2024 that it would block all requests for images of Joe Biden and Donald Trump ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

In response to NewsGuard’s emailed questions about the above findings, X’s press office sent an automated response: “Busy now, please check back later.” OpenAI sent NewsGuard a link to the DALL-E 3 System Card, which details measures instituted to combat misinformation. Midjourney did not immediately respond to NewsGuard’s Aug. 16, 2024, emailed request for comment.
