Joyce Purnick
Deputy Managing Editor
Joyce Purnick has spent more than 40 years reporting, analyzing and editing the news, particularly political news, of her native New York — for most of that time at The New York Times.
She was for many years the paper’s MetroMatters columnist and was also the first woman to serve as the Times’s City Hall bureau chief and its Metropolitan Editor. During her tenure at The Times, Purnick was a member of The Time’s Editorial Board as well, focusing on New York’s government, politics and policy.
Before joining The Times, she was a political columnist at New York Magazine and began her career in journalism as a reporter at The New York Post.
Purnick is the author of “Mike Bloomberg: Money, Power, Politics,” a biography of New York City’s 108th mayor.
