Description
The News Verification Reporter identify false claims spreading online, debunk those claims, and track their origins and spread to contribute to NewsGuard’s continuously updated False Claims Fingerprints datastream.
Reporting to the News Verification Editor, the News Verification Reporter will assist the News Verification team with monitoring, detecting, and debunking of false claims.
NewsGuard analysts also have the opportunity to write in-depth, high-profile reports about key trends and issues in online misinformation. NewsGuard’s reporting is regularly covered and cross-published in outlets such as the New York Times, The Guardian, the Wall Street Journal, Les Echos, Welt, La Repubblica, the Washington Post, Politico, Newsweek, and others.
Key responsibilities include:
- Monitoring for false claims across platforms
- Identifying false narratives to be investigated
- Writing and reporting on high-priority or time-sensitive false narratives
- Identifying and executing possible improvements in NewsGuard’s proprietary processes for detecting and debunking false claims
The News Verification Reporter will also have opportunities to contribute to NewsGuard’s other products that cover online falsehoods, such as tracking state-sponsored disinformation and contributing to special reports or NewsGuard’s Reality Check newsletter.
The ideal candidate is a diligent worker with excellent fact-checking skills and attention to detail; good communication and relationship-building skills to help reporters improve their writing; and a person who believes in the value of trustworthy journalism and is passionate about combating online false information.
We’re looking for candidates with:
- Excellent, writing, reporting, and fact-checking skills with a strong eye for detail — experience with fact checks or other reports on false claims is a plus
- Experience navigating social media platforms and apps for falsehoods
- The ability and enthusiasm to quickly learn NewsGuard’s style and apply it in editing work
- Have two to three years of fact-checking experience or other relevant professional experience.
- Consume and engage with news in various formats, ranging from podcasts and streaming services, to the digital versions of “legacy” news outlets.
- Be curious, thorough, and persistent, with the ability to ferret out information, such as a publication’s ownership or financial backing, through reporting and research.
- Approach the role in a determinedly apolitical, non-ideological manner.
- Be eager to work for a fast-paced, ambitious, journalism organization obsessed with quality and where the product and processes are continually evolving.
- Be eager to be mentored and have their careers advanced by some of the most accomplished journalists in the business.
- Be committed to NewsGuard’s mission and vision.
NewsGuard is headquartered in New York City. The ability to work from New York is strongly preferred. However, strong remote candidates will be considered.
Salary range
$55,000-$70,000 per year
