How Do We Store Your Personal Information and For How Long?

We store your Personal Information on internal databases for no longer than is necessary for the purpose for which such Personal Information is processed.

Personal Information from the contact form is deleted six months after your submission. Backups are kept for a maximum of six months, after which they are securely deleted. You can always request this information be deleted at any time.

Personal Information for subscribers has two parts: information we store in our internal databases and information stored within our third-party processor, Stripe. We retain the data stored in our internal databases for two years after your cancellation date to comply with legal, tax, and accounting obligations. If you have never subscribed to NewsGuard but have provided Personal Information as part of registering to subscription, you can request your registration deleted.

If you purchased your subscription from NewsGuard directly, your Personal Information is also stored indefinitely within Stripe to comply with their respective legal, tax, accounting, and financial obligations.

If you purchased your subscription in Apple’s App Store, the retention and security of your Personal Information are also governed by Apple’s Privacy Policy.

We design our data collection and storage systems with the priority of your security and privacy. We use standard industry practices to protect your data, including firewalls, SSL encryption, and co-location at 24/7 secured, controlled environments. Additionally, if you purchased a subscription from NewsGuard, your financial data is stored by a certified PCI Level 1 Service Provider, the most stringent level of certification available in the payments industry.

You have the right to request copies of your personal submissions to the User-Generated Feedback form NewsGuard within the last six months.

Exercising Your Rights

To exercise the above-mentioned rights, please send an e-mail to [email protected]. We reserve the right to request the provision of additional information necessary to confirm the identity of the enquirer.

Data Processing in the United States

If you are visiting our websites and/or using our services or otherwise providing Personal Information to us from outside the U.S., be aware that your Personal Information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States where our servers are located, and our central database is operated.

Use of cookies and other similar technologies

We, and our partners acting on our behalf, use cookies and other similar technologies to gather Electronic Identification Data, and we use HTML 5 local storage objects to help the browser extension function correctly. When you first access our Website from certain jurisdictions, you will receive a message advising you that cookies and similar technologies are in use. By clicking “accept cookies”, you signify that you understand and agree to the use of these technologies, as described in our Cookie Notice. Your access to our Website will not be affected if you do not accept cookies. For more information about our practices in this area, please see our Cookie Notice.

We also allow select third parties (e.g. Google Analytics) to collect Electronic Identification Data about our Website visitors and browser extension users to provide us with better insights into the use of the Website and browser extension provided you have given your valid consent to such collection. Such Electronic Identification Data is received on an aggregated basis and cannot be used to identify you personally. When using the browser extension, this tracking only occurs if you interact with the browser extension (e.g. hovering/clicking on a shield). We do not track when a shield appears on a page or what pages they appear on. The URL that the interaction occurs from is never tracked.

User-generated feedback

We offer you the opportunity on our Website to provide feedback on our ratings and nutrition labels. This feedback is shared internally only and is not shared with the public and is not a “public activity.”

However, if you represent a website we have rated and written about, we may post any comment or complaint you may have shared with us about that rating or write-up, but only if you have first given your consent. Separately, if we share a comment or complaint you have made, we will only share your name if you have first provided your consent to us doing so, such consent may be withdrawn at any time.

Browsing History

When you visit a website with the NewsGuard browser extension enabled, the browser extension sends the website domain to NewsGuard’s servers to check whether a rating and nutrition label exists for that site and, if one does, to display that rating and nutrition label in your browser.

However, NewsGuard does not collect or store this information or any information about the websites you visit. The servers and load balancers that receive this information do not store or transmit any logs of this traffic.

NewsGuard cannot and does not use data about the websites you visit for any purpose other than to serve its ratings and nutrition labels to you as you use the browser extension.

Email Newsletters

If you submit your name and email address on our Website, we may periodically send you email newsletters about our services, provided you have given your consent.

If you no longer wish to receive our newsletters, you may opt out at any time by following the “unsubscribe” instructions located near the bottom of each email.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We evaluate and update this Privacy Policy periodically in light of changing business practices, technology and legal requirements. Any changes will be posted on this page. We recommend that you regularly consult this Privacy Policy, to make sure that you are aware of any changes. The most recent version of this Privacy Policy is reflected by the version date located at the bottom of this Policy.

This Privacy Policy is specific to NewsGuard AI. Our separate Privacy Policy at newsguardtech.com applies to NewsGuard’s other products, including the NewsGuard browser extension and mobile apps.

Personal Information

The term “Personal Information” as used in this Privacy Policy means any information that enables, or is capable of enabling us to identify you, directly or indirectly, by reference to an identifier such as your name, identification number, location data, online identifier, or one or more factors specific to you.

Information We Collect

NewsGuard AI collects the following categories of information when you use the Service:

Account Information

When you create a NewsGuard AI account, we collect information necessary to set up and manage your account, including your name, email address, password (stored in hashed form), and the country where you reside. We use this information to authenticate you, manage your subscription, and provide customer support.

Payment Information

We use a third-party payment processor, Stripe, to handle subscription payments. Stripe collects and processes your payment details (including credit or debit card numbers) directly. We do not store full payment card numbers on our own systems. We retain limited billing information such as your subscription tier, billing history, and the last four digits of your payment card for invoicing and customer service purposes. Stripe’s use of your information is governed by their privacy policy, available at https://stripe.com/us/privacy. In addition, we may share information with service providers that help us operate subscriptions, process payments, analyze engagement, personalize offers and market our product.

Query and Prompt Data

When you use NewsGuard AI, we collect the text of the prompts and any URLs you submit to the Service. We use this information to:

  • Generate responses to your queries;
  • Monitor and improve the quality and accuracy of the Service;
  • Count the number of prompts associated with your account so we can display a usage meter and manage subscription limits; and
  • In the future, identify topics of interest to you so we can offer personalized news topics, suggested questions, and curated news digests.

You will be notified before any new personalization feature is launched, and where required by law we will obtain your consent before using your prompt history for personalization.

Output Data

We store the responses that NewsGuard AI returns to you, including the publications, ratings, and sources cited in each response. We retain this information so that:

You can review your prior prompts and responses within your account; and

We can track aggregated statistics about how often each publication or source is cited across responses, which helps us evaluate and improve the Service.

Technical and Usage Data

We automatically collect certain technical and usage information when you use the Service, including timestamps of queries and logins, device and browser type, language settings, IP address, approximate geolocation (region level), and information about how you interact with the Service (such as page views, clicks, and session length). This information helps us operate, secure, troubleshoot, and improve the Service.

Feedback

If you provide feedback on a response — for example by clicking the thumbs-up or thumbs-down icon, or by submitting written feedback through our feedback form — we collect and store that feedback together with the related prompt and response. We use this information to evaluate response quality and to improve the Service.

How We Use Your Information

We process the information described above for the following purposes:

  • Operating the Service: authenticating users, generating responses to your queries, displaying your prompt and response history, enforcing usage limits, and providing customer support.
  • Billing and subscription management: processing payments, managing renewals and cancellations, issuing refunds, and detecting and preventing fraudulent transactions.
  • Product improvement and quality assurance: reviewing prompts and responses to evaluate accuracy, troubleshoot errors, and improve the Service’s performance and reliability.
  • Aggregated and anonymized analytics: producing internal reports and metrics (such as which publications are most frequently cited, or which topics are most queried) on an aggregated, de-identified basis.
  • Security and abuse prevention: detecting and preventing fraud, abuse, or violations of our Terms of Service, and protecting the rights, property, and safety of NewsGuard, our users, and others.
  • Legal compliance: complying with applicable legal, tax, accounting, and regulatory obligations.

What We Do Not Do

We want to be especially clear about practices we do not engage in:

  • We do not use your prompts or our responses to train AI models. Your prompts and the responses you receive are not used to train, fine-tune, or otherwise develop NewsGuard AI’s underlying models, nor are they used to train any third party’s models.
  • We do not sell your data. We do not sell your Personal Information, your prompts, your responses, or any other data we collect from you to third parties, and we have no plans to do so.
  • We do not share your individual prompts with advertisers. We do not provide your prompts, responses, or any information derived from them to advertisers, ad networks, or data brokers. However, we may use internally what is being queried in your current chat thread, plus past queries and memory, to match or personalize ads. This information stays within NewsGuard AI and is not directly provided to advertisers.
  • We do not share identifying information with our LLM provider. When we transmit your prompt to our underlying LLM provider in order to generate a response, we send only the contents of the prompt necessary to produce that response. We do not share your name, email address, account identifier, IP address, payment information, or any other identifier that would allow the provider to associate the prompt with you.

How We Share Information; Subprocessors

We share information with a limited set of trusted service providers (“subprocessors”) who help us operate the Service. These providers are bound by contract to protect your information and to use it only for the purposes for which we have engaged them.

  • LLM provider (Anthropic / Claude): We send the contents of your prompt to our underlying large language model provider so that a response can be generated. As noted above, we transmit the prompt on an anonymized basis. Our provider receives the text of the prompt but does not receive identifying information about who submitted it.
  • Hosting (Amazon Web Services): The Service and the data we store are hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure, primarily located in the United States.
  • Analytics (Google Analytics): We use Google Analytics to understand aggregated usage of the Service, such as page views and feature engagement. Google Analytics receives technical usage data on an aggregated basis and does not receive the contents of your prompts or responses.
  • Payments (Stripe): Stripe processes subscription payments on our behalf, as described above under “Payment Information.”

In addition, we may disclose Personal Information in the following limited circumstances:

  • To enforce our rights, protect our property, or protect the rights, safety, or property of NewsGuard, our users, or others;
  • To support external auditing, compliance, and corporate governance functions;
  • In connection with, or during negotiation of, any merger, financing, acquisition, dissolution, or similar transaction involving the sale or transfer of all or a portion of our business or assets;
  • When required by law, regulation, court order, subpoena, or lawful request by public authorities, including to meet national security or law enforcement requirements.

How We Store Your Information and For How Long

We store information on secure servers operated on our behalf by AWS, located in the United States. We retain information only for as long as is reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy.

  • Account information is retained for as long as your account is active, and for two years after your account is cancelled or closed to comply with legal, tax, and accounting obligations.
  • Prompt and response history is retained for as long as your account is active so that you can review it, and is deleted in accordance with our standard retention schedule following account closure. You may delete individual prompts and responses from your account at any time, subject to short-term retention in backups.
  • Feedback is retained in association with the prompt and response to which it relates for as long as that prompt and response are retained.
  • Technical and usage logs are retained for a limited period (typically no longer than twelve months) for security, troubleshooting, and analytics purposes.
  • Backups are retained for a maximum of six months, after which they are securely deleted.
  • Payment records held by Stripe are retained in accordance with Stripe’s own retention policies and applicable legal obligations.

We design our systems with security and privacy in mind. We use industry-standard safeguards including encryption in transit (TLS), encryption at rest, access controls, logging, and regular security reviews. No system can be guaranteed to be 100% secure, but we work continuously to protect your information.

If you believe a child has provided Personal Information to us, please contact us at [email protected].

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, legal requirements, or other factors. When we make changes, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this policy and, where appropriate, provide additional notice (such as a notice within the Service or by email).
