NewsGuard is an internet trust service that keeps users, brands, and democracies safe from misinformation online. Our team of trained journalists and experienced editors uses human intelligence — transparent, accountable, and apolitical reporting — to give people more context for the news and information they see online.

What We Do

Our global team of experienced journalists produces ratings and reviews of the top news and information sources — and the major false narratives that they spread online. Their work results in NewsGuard’s two proprietary datasets: The NewsGuard Ratings and the Misinformation Fingerprints.

The NewsGuard Ratings data consist of trust scores and detailed “Nutrition Label” reviews for the more than 6,500 news and information websites that account for 95% of online engagement with the news in the US, UK, Italy, France, and Germany.

Our Misinformation Fingerprints are a catalogue of the top false narratives spreading online. By reviewing and monitoring the most-engaged news sources, we have a birds-eye view of the narratives spreading across the news landscape — and the sources that spread them. Our Fingerprint for each myth contains a description of the myth, a debunk of the claim, links to stories that have spread the myth, and associated keywords and hashtags. Provided in machine-readable or human readable format, the Fingerprints can be used to seed AI/ML tools or train teams of content moderators.

NewsGuard works with technology platforms, news aggregators, internet service providers, advertising companies, major brands, educational institutions, governments, and researchers to help them spot misinformation and give them more context for the news. By licensing our two proprietary datasets, we help companies and governing bodies inform decision-making and provide end-users with a media literacy resource. From the World Health Organization to Microsoft, we are trusted by the world’s leading brands and institutions as the experts on online misinformation. By using real journalists and a clearly disclosed process, NewsGuard is the opposite of an algorithm: Transparent and accountable.

Our Team

Co-CEOs Steven Brill and Gordon Crovitz are veteran journalists and news entrepreneurs. Brill founded The American Lawyer, Court TV, and the Yale Journalism Initiative. Crovitz was publisher of The Wall Street Journal and a columnist for the paper. Together, they have supervised thousands of journalists around the world. They were co-CEOs and co-founders of Press+, which was sold to RR Donnelley.
